The index for your msds book could be as simple as the inventory list with the corresponding page number of each msds sheet for the products that you will include in your binder. Or you might want to include categories in your book if you think it will make it easier for your employees to find the msds sheets that way.
OSHA doesn’t have an msds index requirement, but keep in mind that your employees must be able to find the documents and you have to provide training to them as to how to find the sheets.
The more safety data sheets you have or need, the harder it might be for your employees to find them. We suggest a simple index with page numbers for 50 or even 75 data sheets. Much more than that and you might want to include categories in your index or even multiple msds books that contain one category in each book.
Msds sample index (simple):
Msds sheet for:...........................Page #
Acetone MSDS.............................001
Clorox bleach MSDS.....................008
Ethanol MSDS..............................016
Ethyl acetate MSDS......................024
Gasoline SDS...............................030
GE silicone SDS...........................037
Methanal MSDS............................044
Propane MSDS.............................050
Sodium MSDS..............................056
Wd 40 MSDS................................065
Windex MSDS..............................073
You might want to include MSDS or SDS in your page titles to keep track of which records you have the new 16 section safety data sheet for and which ones you’re still using the MSDS sheets for. It will make it easier to update your book later.
